It all adds up to something quite unique, and surprisingly emotive a clicker with a ticker. The Alter Ego experience is underpinned by a mood-setting piano and vocal score, while the graphics and dialogue draw heavily from Japan’s popular Visual Novels. Not exactly a rehash of Cookie Clicker, then. In book-filled rooms, a mysterious, expressionless girl called Es guides you through multiple-choice questions designed to reveal something of your inner self - and discovers something of herself in the process. Everything is black and white, save for the occasional blue butterfly fluttering by. You drift through shadowy corridors, tapping on pensive thought bubbles to accumulate ‘ego’ currency. Here are three reasons you should wander down its corridors of self-reflection…įor the atmosphere Alter Ego is a bit like a dream. With Alter Ego, Japanese studio Caramel Column has produced an incremental game all about self-discovery. Despite the genre’s simple mechanics, some developers come up with some surprisingly imaginative ideas. There are clickers in which you become a successful novelist, battle through roguelike dungeons, mine for meme-themed currency, and so on. Unlike other reviewers that've played through several times I will not get every ending, but I will get *my* ending.Incremental games come in all shapes and sizes, and weird and wonderful premises. That’s how you’ll truly experience this master piece. Not a story you want to see every ending to or see the happiest ending to, make it yours. You might say “why it’s just a game” but in my opinion you need to make this game your story. I’ll be honest, some of those bubbles made me flinch because of how they dug into old scars. The speech will change as you progress through ES’s personality test and will fit your results. The way to progress is either to unlock books and allow it to grow over time, tap the butterfly that’ll sometimes appear in ES’s library and watch an ad or you have to tap on the speech bubbles that’ll appear on the main screen slowly moving towards you. They are constantly fighting each other, the mighty being telling you not to trust ES and ES showing dissatisfaction towards the mighty being. They introduce a mighty being that constantly tells you not to go against the grain and a unsympathetic girl, ES, that turns out to be more of a lost lamb finding her answers with you along the game. The personality tests take on a form that makes them more personal to the being doing them. This game isn’t like other games, when I first opened it I expect a normal TapTap game that I’d play for all of a day or so and then delete, but then it turned into so much more. In my opinion only the best of games can create that reaction and I’m glad to say that this one was one of them.īeautiful, yet horrifying. After unlocking the true ending I was left smiling for a couple of minutes. I started off with the bad ending and original thought that what I had done was a good thing but after unlocking what I’m gonna call the true good ending I know for a fact my first ending was wrong. This game branches off into three different paths and your choices will affect the outcome. This game is perfect for those looking for more insight into themselves and looking for something a little extra like DDLC extra (doki doki literature club). Another thing is I liked this game so much I would LOVE to play another game created by these people. First I’m gonna start off by saying I’m one of those types that sees a game and says ”Oh this game looks cool I’m gonna download it to see if I like it” and even when liking those games I never leave a review, so me just starting this should say something.
